We Are The Granddaughters

Scotland’s witch trials were some of the worst in Europe. In the sixteenth and seventeenth century between 3,000 and 4,000 women were tortured and executed, roughly ten times as many women per capita as in neighbouring England.

Creative Scotland gave me support to explore the witch trials in a non-linear and experimental play. The result is ‘We Are The Granddaughters’, where a contemporary narrative plays alongside fictionalised versions of historic Scottish women’s lives. It was probably the most structurally and thematically challenging piece I’ve written.

The play was recently completed and is available to read or perform.
